Chamba District Overview

An official Census 2011 detail of Chamba, a district of Himachal Pradesh has been released by Directorate of Census Operations in Himachal Pradesh. Enumeration of key persons was also done by census officials in Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh. 

Chamba District Population 2011

In 2011, Chamba had population of 519,080 of which male and female were 261,320 and 257,760 respectively. In 2001 census, Chamba had a population of 460,887 of which males were 235,218 and remaining 225,669 were females. Chamba District population constituted 7.56 percent of total Maharashtra population. In 2001 census, this figure for Chamba District was at 7.58 percent

Chamba District Population Growth Rate

There was change of 12.63 percent in the population compared to population as per 2001. In the previous census of India 2001, Chamba District recorded increase of 17.19 percent to its population compared to 1991. 

Chamba District Density 2011

The initial provisional data released by census India 2011, shows that density of Chamba district for 2011 is 80 people per sq. km. In 2001, Chamba district density was at 71 people per sq. km. Chamba district administers 6,522 square kilometers of areas. 

Chamba Literacy Rate 2011

Average literacy rate of Chamba in 2011 were 72.17 compared to 62.91 of 2001. If things are looked out at gender wise, male and female literacy were 82.59 and 61.67 respectively. For 2001 census, same figures stood at 76.41 and 48.85 in Chamba District. Total literate in Chamba District were 323,842 of which male and female were 186,064 and 137,778 respectively. In 2001, Chamba District had 246,169 in its district. 

Chamba Sex Ratio 2011

With regards to Sex Ratio in Chamba, it stood at 986 per 1000 male compared to 2001 census figure of 959. The average national sex ratio in India is 940 as per latest reports of Census 2011 Directorate. In 2011 census, child sex ratio is 953 girls per 1000 boys compared to figure of 955 girls per 1000 boys of 2001 census data. 

Chamba Child Population 2011

In census enumeration, data regarding child under 0-6 age were also collected for all districts including Chamba. There were total 70,359 children under age of 0-6 against 69,579 of 2001 census. Of total 70,359 male and female were 36,024 and 34,335 respectively. Child Sex Ratio as per census 2011 was 953 compared to 955 of census 2001. In 2011, Children under 0-6 formed 13.55 percent of Chamba District compared to 15.10 percent of 2001. There was net change of -1.55 percent in this compared to previous census of India.

Chamba District Urban Population 2011

Out of the total Chamba population for 2011 census, 6.96 percent lives in urban regions of district. In total 36,108 people lives in urban areas of which males are 19,357 and females are 16,751. Sex Ratio in urban region of Chamba district is 865 as per 2011 census data. Similarly child sex ratio in Chamba district was 924 in 2011 census. Child population (0-6) in urban region was 3,344 of which males and females were 1,738 and 1,606. This child population figure of Chamba district is 8.98 % of total urban population. Average literacy rate in Chamba district as per census 2011 is 92.05 % of which males and females are 95.31 % and 88.25 % literates respectively. In actual number 30,159 people are literate in urban region of which males and females are 16,793 and 13,366 respectively. 

Chamba District Rural Population 2011

As per 2011 census, 93.04 % population of Chamba districts lives in rural areas of villages. The total Chamba district population living in rural areas is 482,972 of which males and females are 241,963 and 241,009 respectively. In rural areas of Chamba district, sex ratio is 996 females per 1000 males. If child sex ratio data of Chamba district is considered, figure is 955 girls per 1000 boys. Child population in the age 0-6 is 67,015 in rural areas of which males were 34,286 and females were 32,729. The child population comprises 14.17 % of total rural population of Chamba district. Literacy rate in rural areas of Chamba district is 70.60 % as per census data 2011. Gender wise, male and female literacy stood at 81.51 and 59.73 percent respectively. In total, 293,683 people were literate of which males and females were 169,271 and 124,412 respectively.
